How to Paint Siding
A few general guidelines can make painting siding go more smoothly:
-
- Prime bare wood and any dark hues that will be covered with light-colored paint with primer.
- If you’re right-handed, paint clapboard siding from left to right; if you’re left-handed, paint from right to left.
- Brush up and down, following the wood grain, rather than side to side, while painting shingles.
- Begin at the top and work your way down the wall.
- Before relocating the ladder, work your way across the wall, reaching as far as you can safely in each location.
- If you’re using different colors for the siding and trim, paint them in this order: siding, trim, windows, and doors.
Follow these procedures to correctly paint your siding:
1. Remove any dust from bare wood areas, then use latex or alkyd primer to spot-prime these areas.
2. Begin by painting each clapboard’s bottom edge. Between coats, make sure the crack is entirely filled.
3. Using a mini-roller, apply paint from side to side. When compared to a brush, this tool gives more paint with less effort.
4. After the paint has been applied using the roller, smooth the paint surface with a wide brush.
