How to Install Deck Joists

Published by admin on

Though joists are extremely sturdy and rarely deflect under pressure, they can easily shift from side to side. The unsupported span between two adjacent joists can rise from 14″ to 18″ if they bend away from each other, making the decking board above feel bouncy when walked on. Always maintain correct joist spacing to avoid this.

1. Using a framing or combination square, draw lines for joist hangers on the ledger. The distance between these lines should be 1 1/2″.

2. Using your layout lines as a reference, nail the joist hangers to the ledger. This job necessitates the use of special galvanized hanger nails.

3. Place each joist in a hanger until it is flush with the ledger. The hanger should then be nailed to the joist on both sides. Carry on with the rest of the joists in the same manner.

4. After all of the joists have been fastened to the ledger and beams, use galvanized 16d nails to secure the joist lumber to the exposed joist ends.
