How to Install Deck Posts
The posts are the deck’s principal vertical elements. They bear the weight of the beams and joists above them and transfer it to the concrete foundation piers (and ultimately to the ground below the frost line). Posts must meet the following criteria in order to function properly:
- Installed plumb
- Made from pressure-treated southern pine that has been in contact with the earth.
- Water drainage holes have been made at the bottom and are mounted on post anchors.
- Galvanized fasteners were nailed or screwed to the anchors.
In most circumstances, four four posts are sufficient to support the load. Occasionally, 6 6 posts are used, not only because they seem more substantial, but also because the extra stock on the 6 6 permits the post to sit straight on the pier when it is not centered on the pier.
1. Use galvanized nails or screws to secure the post to its anchor. Make careful to use a fastener in each anchor hole.
2. Secure the post with a temporary brace and a stake inserted into the ground. Then, to keep the post in place, level it and nail the brace in place.
3. Place a long board and level on the ledger with the posts braced, and mark a level line on the side of each post.
